Categories and income sources

Asienta has two separate registers: Expense categories (what the money goes on) and Income sources (where it comes from). Both start empty — you build your own.

Build the tree

• Click Category (or Source) to add one at the top level.
• Add a subcategory to any row — for example Housing → Rent. Nesting can go as deep as you like.
• Drag a row onto another to make it a subcategory; drag it onto the header to move it back to the top level.
• Rename and Archive are on each row. Archived categories keep their history and can be restored.

Start with four or five big categories; split them when you feel the need.

Keep a category out of reports

Some money moves aren’t really income or spending — gifts between family members, money held for someone else. Mark such a category Keep out of reports:

• its entries still change account balances and net worth;
• they are not counted as income or spending, in reports or in the journal total;
• subcategories inherit the setting;
• in the journal such entries carry a not in reports badge.

Count in reports switches it back.
