Base currency
The currency your net worth, charts and reports are shown in — and what happens when you change it.
The base currency is the one your balances, net worth, charts and reports are shown in. Every entry is still recorded in its own currency; the base currency is only how totals are expressed.
Setting it
The first currency you add to a household becomes the base one. To change it, open Settings → Money and format → Base currency.
Changing it later
You can switch the base currency at any time, and nothing you recorded is rewritten:
- each entry remembers the currency and rate it was recorded with;
- figures are shown in the new base currency at the rate of each entry’s own date;
- switching back to the previous base currency shows exactly the figures you saw before.
If there is no known rate between the old and new base currency for some older date, those entries are shown in their own currency and left out of totals until the rate is available. Reports tell you how many entries are affected.
Balances in the base currency
An account balance is converted at the latest known rate, not summed from historical equivalents. A currency you have sold completely therefore leaves no leftover “exchange difference” on the account.
