# Expenses and income
> Record a purchase or an income in a few keystrokes with the entry panel.

## Open the entry panel
Press N or click **Record entry** in the header. The panel opens over the current screen, so you can still see your journal.
## Record an expense
1. Keep **Expense** selected.
2. Type the **amount**. The currency button inside the amount field switches the currency — for example, to record a purchase in dollars on a euro card.
3. Pick the **account**. Recently used accounts come first; **All · N** opens the full list with search.
4. Pick the **category**. Frequent categories come first; ↑ ↓ move through the list.
5. Change the **date** if the purchase wasn’t today, and add an optional **comment**.
6. Press Enter to record. Esc closes the panel.
## Record an income
Choose **Income**. Instead of an expense category you pick an **income source** — salary, freelance, interest. Income sources are a separate register from expense categories.
## Amounts in another currency
When the amount’s currency differs from your base currency, the panel shows the reference rate for the entry date. If you paid at a different rate, set **Own rate** — see [Your own exchange rate](/en/docs/own-rate/).
## Recording the same thing again
In the journal, **Repeat** opens the panel pre-filled from an existing entry — handy for rent or a regular purchase.
## Opening balances
What an account held before you started is not income. It is set as the account’s opening balance — see [Accounts](/en/docs/accounts/).
