# Categories and income sources

> Build your own tree of expense categories and income sources, and keep some of them out of reports.

Asienta has two separate registers: **Expense categories** (what the money goes on) and **Income sources** (where it comes from). Both start empty — you build your own.

## Build the tree

- Click **Category** (or **Source**) to add one at the top level.
- Add a subcategory to any row — for example Housing → Rent. Nesting can go as deep as you like.
- Drag a row onto another to make it a subcategory; drag it onto the header to move it back to the top level.
- **Rename** and **Archive** are on each row. Archived categories keep their history and can be restored.

Start with four or five big categories; split them when you feel the need.

## Keep a category out of reports

Some money moves aren’t really income or spending — gifts between family members, money held for someone else. Mark such a category **Keep out of reports**:

- its entries still change account balances and net worth;
- they are not counted as income or spending, in reports or in the journal total;
- subcategories inherit the setting;
- in the journal such entries carry a **not in reports** badge.

**Count in reports** switches it back.
